Tokyo to Nikko

Day 1

After a bit of easy street riding to get used to your motorcycle, you will be leaving Tokyo on a brief stretch of highway. First-timer to Japan, and can't read any Japanese traffic signs? No worries!
We set up your navigation unit with a special set of waypoints that guide you out of the city in the easiest to understand way, using the least crowded roads.

The trip will start with an easy ride along the expressway before veering off onto local roads. You will soon be riding alongside a river as the road continues into the foothills surrounding Nikko National Park.

The roads are winding and scenic with a few tighter places to keep your attention. As you continue on an upward climb, you will be on the Iro Hazaka, a famous winding road leading to the beautiful Lake Ashinoko. There are many lakeside restaurants etc at which you can take a break before carrying on to your lakeside hotel.
Visit the world famous Toshogu Shrine, a World Heritage site, and enjoy the atmosphere of this very popular town.

Total distance approx.190km, and will take about 3.5-4hrs riding time.

Day 2
Nikko to Inawashiro

Leaving Nikko, your route winds gently up into the Nikko National Park and onwards to the Nichiei-non Momiji Line, and climbs past the Hunter Mountain Ski Resort.
As you continue onwards toward Nasu Kogen, the roads are easy cruising and will show you the local rural lifestyle.

Stop at one of our favorite coffee shops in Nasu Kogen, and ride up to the Nasu Ropeway for some great views if time permits.

The road continues along some fun twisty roads to Mt. Jeans and onwards to the historic Japanese village of Ouchi Juku for some sightseeing.

Your hotel, located at a lovely spot on the side of a river, is about a 20 minute ride from here. Total distance is around 220km and 4hrs of riding time.

Inawashiro to Yunohama

Day 3

A really fun ride awaits you today. First, a ride towards Mt Bandai on the the Bandai Gold Line, which winds its way up past ski fields on excellent mountain roads. From there, it’s on to Lake Hibara, nestled in the mountains. We have another favorite cafe here. As you ride along the shores of Lake Hibara and climb towards Mt Nishi Agatsuma, the road gets significantly more twisty. It's great fun and the scenery is great on a nice day.

As the road begins to dip down the mountain, you are back in easy cruising mode and heading towards the Sea of Japan coastline.
Continue on along one of my favorite seaside rides. Nothing tricky or technical involved-this is just a very nice road along the seaside.

Nice restaurants, cafes and photo spots along the way to your seaside hotel at Yunohama Onsen. Enjoy a wander along the beach and catch the sunset.

Day 4
Yunohama to Lake Tazawa
Back on the road today, you briefly follow the coastline before turning inland to Mt Choukai.

The road winds through lush green forest and on up the slopes of Mt Choukai. It’s a spectacular way to start your day and the view is equally wonderful. Stop at the summit, grab some refreshments, and proceed down the other side of the mountain. The scenery briefly changes to rice fields before lush forests and twisting roads begin.
As you move back towards lower altitudes, the roads flatten out to easy cruising again and you proceed towards Lake Tazawa. It’s a hidden gem tucked in the mountains.

Take a ride around the lake, or a scenic cruise on a lake tour, time permitting. Your hotel on the lake shore awaits!

Lake Tazawa to Ginzan Onsen

Day 5

Today’s route to Ginzan will take you to Lake Gosho and an easy cruise along the Waga River valley- rural Japan as it really is. Stop at the waypointed cafe for coffee or homemade ice cream.
Your route continues following the Minase river for a period as it begins to climb higher. The roads are winding but easy.

My favorite coffee shop will appear on your navigation unit, and it's well worth a stop.

The road climbs and winds its way through Yunohama Pass. It is easy riding, but a cool road with some great views before arriving at Hanayama Lake. Shortly after, you will veer off toward Ginzan Onsen which is a lovely place to stay.

Total distance today is just under 270 km and is about 5.0 hrs riding time.

Day 6
Ginzan Onsen to Bandai
Begin with a quiet cruise through rural Yamagata and take a brief expressway stretch before heading to the mountains and the Zao Onsen ski resort.

Wind you way into the mountains and along the famous Zao Echo line- a lushly wooded ride on excellent mountain roads with lots of scenery.
As you continue, the road reverts to easy cruising mode. You will cruise on roads by rice fields and on past Lake Shichikashuku, before reaching your hotel set on the slopes of Mt. Azuma. Enjoy the great view and ambience of your mountain hotel. Distance about 290km, with a riding time around 5hrs. There is an option for lots of twisty winding roads today, so let us know if you want to give it a try!

Bandai to Matsunoyama

Day 7

Your hotel sits about 2km from the start of the famous Azuma Bandai Skyline. This is a perfect start to your day, as the road winds past an active volcano, along mountain ridges with awesome scenery.
Continue on to the Bandai Azuma Lake Line and on to Lake Hibara. Take a quick rest break at a strategically located cafe, and carry on past Lake Hibara and on toward Mt Yogai on nice, uncrowded country roads.

From here, your route continues along the river side and on to the Tadami Dam, where you can take a brief rest stop. The road up alongside the dam is spectacular, followed by an easy twisty ride down to the other side towards Uonuma.

Still have lots of energy? Add an intense option to finish. Otherwise, continue on to your onsen hotel, which is tucked in a small mountain village famous for hot springs and great atmosphere. You will sleep very well tonight.

Day 8
Matsunoyama to Tokyo

Sadly it's the last day, but we have a very cool ride in store for you. Leaving your hotel, you will ride along past Nozawa Onsen, up a great road to Shiga Kogen Ski fields, and on past Yokotayama Ski field and on past Manza Ski area to Karuizawa. (Intense option available!)
From Karuizawa, a popular vacation town with lots to see and do, join the expressway back to Tokyo. Distance 320km, and it will take approx. 5 hours riding time.
