Tokyo to Kusatsu
Day 1
After a bit of easy street riding to get used to your motorcycle, you will be leaving Tokyo on a brief stretch of highway. First-timer to Japan, and can't read any Japanese traffic signs? No worries! We set up your navigation unit with a special set of waypoints that guide you out of the city in the easiest to understand way, using the least crowded roads.

Leaving Tokyo this morning your route takes you northwards towards Nagano. Leaving the expressway, you will meet the first of the winding roads of your trip. As you continue along the Nidoage Toge, enjoy the natural scenery, and then onward to the Nihon Romantic Highway.

A few more scenic windy courses will bring you to the hot springs town of Kusatsu, and the first accommodations of your tour.

Distance is approx 280km, which can be covered in around 5 hours.

Day 2
Kusatsu to Kashiwazaki
Japan motorcycle tour ninjatours twisty roads mount shirane
Today's ride will take you up through Manza ski resort to Mt. Shirane and Shiga Kogen, along some great twisting mountain roads with great scenery.

Continue on past Nozawa Onsen and onwards through mountain passes to your hotel on the Sea of Japan coastline at Kashiwazaki. Sunsets can be brilliant. For those looking for an extra challenge there is an alternate course available.

Distance is approx 205 km, which can be covered in around 4.5 hours.

Kashiwazaki to Yunohama
Day 3
Start off the day with a ride along the seaside for about 50km before hoping onto the expressway to bypass Niigata city traffic. Exiting the expressway, today's “intense option” which diverts off into mountains here along Asahi Super Line, can be a very challenging ride. Alternatively continue on one of my favorite seaside rides along the Sea of Japan.

Nothing tricky or technical involved- this is just a very nice cruisy road along the seaside. Nice restaurants and coffee shops, photo spots, etc. along the way to your seaside hotel at Yunohama Onsen. Enjoy a wander along the beach and catch the sunset.

Distance Approx. 250km, 5 hrs riding. Enjoy the rest tonight: some big rides await.

Day 4
Yunohama to Lake Tazawa

Leaving Yunohama you will enjoy a brief ride along the coastline before heading up Chokai Blue Line towards Mt Chokai. Nice ride with some excellent scenery.

From here you will continue along some great winding roads through forests and mountains and on to Lake Tazawa and your lakeside accommodations.

Distance is approx 230 km, which can be covered in around 5 hours.

Tazawa to Hokkaido Hakodate
Day 5

Today is quite a long ride, but it does include a nice ride up past Mt. Hachimantai and Lake Towada to the Aomori ferry terminal, where you will board the ferry to Hakodate.

The trip will take 8.5 hours. Your Hotel in Hakodate is a short ride from the Ferry.

Day 6
Hokkaido Hakodate to Hokkaido Shakotan
Today we will follow the road along Ono River valley and on to Ezura river valley to the Hokkaido west coast. The route continues along the coast to Miyano and then turns inland to Kita Hiyama hot springs and then continues on along the coast line to Benkei Cape, Benten Island and Shimami Coast to your hotel for the day.

Distance is approx 340 km, which can be covered in around 6 hours.

Hokkaido Shakotan to Hokkaido Kitami
Day 7

Leaving the hotel today, you will briefly continue along the coast to Otaru, bypassing Sapporo and on to Katsurazawa Dam and Furano Ski fields.

Stop for a look at the famous flower farms en-route and ride the famous Roller Coaster Road. Then on to your Hotel for today. Nice easy cruising roads and good sight seeing.

Day 8
Hokkaido Kitami to Hokkaido Kushiro
Today's roads are easy cruising and scenic. Leaving the hotel, the route travels past Kamiyubetsu Tulip Park which is well worth a brief stop and on to Lake Saroma and Lake Notoro and Lake Abashiri.

Route continues to Bihoro Pass past Lake Kussharo and Akkeshi to your hotel in Kushiro.

Distance is approx 290 km, which can be covered in around 6 hours.

Hokkaido Kushiro to Ferry Terminal Tomokamai
Day 9

Enjoy a relaxing ride along the coast to the ferry which will depart at 18:45 in the afternoon.

The ride is approx. 350km so you will have time to enjoy the sights and enjoy an early dinner before embarking on your overnight Ferry.

Ferry Terminal Sendai to Bandai
Day 10

Your overnight ferry will arrive at Sendai port at about 10:30. From the ferry, you will take a very short ride along the expressway before heading into the mountains and a great ride along the Zao Echo Line.

Mt. Zao is a very popular ski area famous for volcanos, hot springs and scenery. The road is challenging in places but is worth the effort. This is followed by an easy cruise through some lower mountain passes, or a more exciting spectacular ride up the Azuma Bandai Skyline (time permitting) which will lead you to your onsen mountain hotel.

Distance is approx 260 km, which can be covered in around 5.5 hours.

Day 11
Mt. Bandai to Nikko
If you feel like you need to ride the Bandai Azuma Skyline again (or try it for the first time because you missed it yesterday) go ahead. Either way, you will end up on the Azuma Bandai Lake Line, a nicely wooded winding country road, and on along the Bandai G Line which winds down the mountain past ski fields and resorts towards Lake Inawahiro.

Continue on to Ouchi Juku Historic village for some sightseeing if you are inclined. Ride to Mt. Jeans and onward to Nasu Kogen to another strategically located Coffee Shop in Nasu where you can take a brief break from riding. As you continue onward riding through attractive rural farming areas, you are heading for the Nichinan Momoji Line and Hunter Mountain ski field to your hotel in Nikko, a famous onsen and World Heritage site.

Total Distance approx. 300km Riding time 5-6 hrs.

Day 12
Ninjatours Japan motorcycle tour Nikko Toshogu
Last day today, so enjoy some sightseeing in Nikko before heading back to Tokyo. We have some alternate routes available for those wanting more twisties, or an easy relaxed ride into Tokyo to suit your preference.
